California EV Charger Tax Credit 2026: Federal Section 30C + State Incentives

How to combine the federal Section 30C credit with California state and utility programs — and check your address eligibility before the June 30 deadline.

The Federal Section 30C Credit (Brief)

The Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit refunds 30% of your home EV charger equipment and installation cost, up to $1,000. To qualify, the property must sit in an eligible census tract — IRS-defined low-income or non-urban tracts under the 2020 census — and the charger must be placed in service by June 30, 2026. Renters do not qualify. Read the full Section 30C guide for filing details, qualifying costs, and Form 8911 instructions.

California-Specific Incentives

California offers additional incentives through the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) EVSE Rebate Program, which provides up to $500 for income-eligible households. The CPUC program is administered through local utilities including PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E. Check your utility’s website for current availability — CPUC funding is released in tranches and may be paused or active depending on the month. The federal Section 30C credit and the CPUC rebate can be combined; your Section 30C credit is calculated on your net cost after any CPUC rebate received.

California Section 30C — Frequently Asked Questions

Many California addresses qualify, particularly in inland areas, Central Valley ZIP codes, and non-coastal suburban areas. Dense coastal urban ZIPs (San Francisco, Santa Monica, etc.) are less likely to qualify as low-income or non-urban tracts. Use the ZIP code tool in the calculator to check your specific address.
